DESCRIPTION OF SUBJECT

Francoromance Studies comprise academic studies of the languages, literatures and cultures of French-speaking countries. Besides France, these include several other countries spread over four continents, where French is the official language, language of communication, or spoken by an important minority.

OCCUPATIONAL FIELDS AND CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Subsequent non-teaching occupational fields

Career opportunities exist in professional academic areas such as publishing, librarianship, the media, in cultural fields, international organisations, the diplomatic service and private foundations.

Teacher training (Lehramt)

Graduates qualify for admittance to the Master of Education program and a Referendariat period [mandatory school teaching practice] in the following subjects:

  • Gymnasien und Oberschulen

More informations on the offered courses for the teaching profession at public schools can be found here.

Possibilities for additional qualifications

Graduates qualify for admittance to a Master’s Program

Supplementary/optional courses
The Certificate Program Foundation Studies in Digital Media for Education is an optional course for students studying education related subjects.

OBJECTIVES AND CONTENTS OF PROGRAM

Detailed list of available courses in online course prospectus

Subject combinations non-school career fields

In principle, first-year students are able to study any combination of main or subsidiary subjects offered by the University of Bremen.

The field has no special recommendations regarding suitable combinations with the main subject.

Information on possible overlaps within the following subjects.

Stages of study / curricula / description of modules

Students choose between three courses:
Profilfach (major course), Komplementärfach (minor course) or Lehramtsoption (teacher-training course).
The program imparts foundation knowledge in the disciplines of linguistics, literary science and area studies.
The main focus of the program thus lies on the French language, including its different national and regional variants, past and present French language and literatures, as well as the history and cultures of France and the Francophone countries.
Furthermore, French writing and spoken language skills are systematically trained in special language courses. These comprise approx. one quarter of the studies.

Major fields

Students choose between three courses:
Profilfach (major course), Komplementärfach (minor course) or Lehramtsoption (teacher-training course).

In the Profilfach the students specialize in the French scientific disciplines or study another Romance language (Spanish, Portuguese or Italian).

In the teacher training course (French didactics) the program runs as follows:
FD1 Basic module French didactics (4th semester)
In this module the theoretical foundations of the communicative foreign language classes are introduced. Subject of discussion are functional-, communicative, intercultural and methodological competences as well as language devices.
The module FD2 ("Aufbaumodul") French didactics (5th semester) as well as a practical phase in the context of a didactical school-internship.

General studies

General Studies account for 10 - 25% of the study programme. These courses train key competences for subsequent career fields. By building their own individual specialities, students are able to shape and amplify their academic profile.

Education science

In this programme area, subject-related studies in the field of teacher training are supplemented with courses dealing with teaching practice. This programme area comprises 13 - 23 % of studies in the field of teacher training, depending on the type of school envisaged. It encompasses the following topics: studies in education, subject didactics, internships and key qualifications.

Profile area

Im Profilfach wird eine Vertiefung gewählt: Französisch, Italienisch, Portugiesisch oder Spanisch.

Practical

Teaching practice for students of the teacher-traning course.
Students of the Profilfach must undertake a compulsory work placement, preferably abroad. It is possible to also undertake a second work placement, which will also count as a study credit.

Study abroad

It is compulsory for student majors to complete a six month course of studies abroad. Students studying two foreign languages can complete in one of their two subjects an optional 4 month period abroad (which can be divided in max. 4 parts)
School-internships abroad will be credited.
It is recommended that students undertake the semester abroad in their 3rd semester.
