DESCRIPTION OF SUBJECT

Elementary Mathematics deals with the area of mathematics regarded as basic knowledge and which confronts us in many forms in every-day life situations. It encompasses the basic mathematical concepts and structures known to civilisations for thousdands of years: the symmetries and patterns, numbers and operations, graphical depictions and tables, algebraic structures and functional correlations with which we are confronted in many areas of life, both consciously as well as unconsciously. This is a main component of the mathematics taught in primary schools and it also plays a key role in elementary education.
Studies in Elementary Mathematics at university level focus on the teaching of mathematics for the aforementioned school type and the area of child education.

OCCUPATIONAL FIELDS AND CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Subsequent non-teaching occupational fields

The Bachelor course qualifies students to become teachers in many areas of mathematics and natural science, e.g. in the field of primary education, nursery schools, as well as in the field of teaching children with special needs or with special mathematical abilities, and the development of teaching materials and teaching media.

Teacher training (Lehramt)

Graduates qualify for admittance to the Master of Education program and a Referendariat period [mandatory school teaching practice] in the following subjects:

  • Inklusive Pädagogik/Sonderpädagogik an Grundschulen
  • Grundschule

Possibilities for additional qualifications

Graduates qualify for admittance to a Master’s Program

To acquire the qualification to teach at state schools, students must subsequently obtain a Master of Education postgraduate degree (M.Ed). This has to be followed by an 18-month period of practice teaching in school, which ends with the second state exam for teachers in Germany.

Supplementary/optional courses
The Certificate Program Foundation Studies in Digital Media for Education is an optional course for students studying education related subjects.

Stages of study / curricula / description of modules

Studies in the subject Elementary Mathematics train students in the foundations of the subject which are of relevance for teaching and learning mathematics. Mathematical thinking in arithmetic and geometry, stochastic and mathematical modelling and broad-based practical as well as theoretical knowledge of teaching skills are included in the basic curriculum and are compulsory for all students.
Courses train students in the analysis of learning processes and didactics, preparing them for independent academic and practical work.

Major fields

Students may choose between specialisations depending on school types, which vary in the weighting of subject content and teaching modules.

Education science

In this programme area, subject-related studies in the field of teacher training are supplemented with courses dealing with teaching practice. This programme area comprises 13 - 23 % of studies in the field of teacher training, depending on the type of school envisaged. It encompasses the following topics: studies in education, subject didactics, internships and key qualifications.

Practical

Four periods of teaching practice, each of six-weeks, are compulsory (usually following the first, second, third and fifth semester). These are integrated in the different teacher-training courses.
